For many years, there were special "shortcut" codes to dial some parts of the Republic of Ireland from the UK. However, you now must dial the number in full international format.

Replace the trunk prefix 0 of the Republic of Ireland number with telephone country code +353. If you are calling on a mobile phone, just enter the number in international format, beginning with +353 (including the plus symbol). If you are on a landline phone, replace the trunk prefix 0 with 00 353.

Note that these instructions apply even if you are making a local call from Northern Ireland to a nearby part of the Republic of Ireland, such as from Newry to Dundalk.

The telephone country code for Ireland is +353, and you must drop the leading 0 of the Irish number. From the UK, dial +353 (with the plus symbol) from a mobile, or 00 353 from a landline.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)

From Northern Ireland, just dial the normal national number.

From the Republic, dial 00 44 then the UK number minus its leading zero.
