in primary schools a child is called 'écolier / écolière'. In junior high school he/she is 'un collégien, une collégienne' (from the word collège for these schools). senior high school is called 'le lycée' and the student there is 'un lycéen, une lycéenne'. A student past that point (in university or college) is called 'un étudiant, une étudiante'.
