I'm not so sure but I think it could be a scientist or a discoverer. But out of the two I would say scientist. There are others, mostly working in sub-catagories of the above. Scientists that you might find doing research on rare animals, include Zoologists, entomologists, Biologists; Marine Biologiests, Marine Zoologists, and Microbiologists.
