It wont hurt and it will surely calm them down.
Bulldogs are calm and very gentle dog.
what you should do is sound proof your basement then when the fireworks start put your dog down there and it should keep it calm.
Walk with him/her or play with him/her. If this does not work try giving him/her treats or food to calm them down. Or it might just be a puppy thing. My rabbit loves my dog. She hops round his legs and licks him when he's laying down, but she hides when he starts barking. So a Rabbit would probably be fine around a docile dog, but act scared around an aggresieve dog.
