Make sure you're using the most recent version (Help->Check for Updates...) then go to Tools->Add-ons and select the "Themes" tab at the top. By default there's only the original theme, you can get more by clicking the "Get Themes" link in the bottom right of that window. Another easy way to change a theme is using the Personas extension. Even this extension is still in experimental stage, but it works for Firefox 2.0 to Firefox 3.0.
To change the background on Firefox 8, you can use a custom user style through the "Stylish" extension or apply a theme. Install the Stylish add-on from the Firefox Add-ons site, create a new style, and use CSS to define your desired background. Alternatively, you can browse and install pre-made themes directly from the Add-ons site to change the overall look, including backgrounds, of your Firefox browser.

No, it's meant to just change the theme for that particular user that you want to change. (:
Google Chrome and Firefox are two different browsers. If you're meaning the Google search page, you can change your default search page to Firefox or any other search engine.
In Firefox's menu bar, click on "File" - then click to remove the check mark next to "Work Offline".
The theme can change based on the character actions and development.
