I take it that you're asking because you've had as much trouble as I have. I can only offer advise to make it better, not as easy as it should be. I've changed many oil filters and even with the heat of engines and stuff in the way, all of them are easier than changing the GE filter. I think that the problem is with a not so good match of threading from the factory. They're not damaged - they just wedge together too much.

The GE wrench is worthlessly flimsy. If they made a truly heavy duty fitted wrench that would be ideal.

First buy a strap wrench from an auto parts store. Take a string with you marked with the circumference of the filter outer housing so that you get one big enough. The wrench will be for truck oil filters. With the strap type, it's adjustable.

Also buy a silicon stick tube (like a very big chapstick tube) from the hardware store. Use that to lube the gasket and the threads without having any fear of contamination to the water.

Have a pan of clean water handy to flush the housing once empty. You might use some damp paper towels to wipe out the inside of the housing too.

I put a tub under the filter to catch spilled water.

Wash your hands.

My system has a shutoff on both sides of the filter. Turn both off and bleed the pressure from the red release on top.

Use the strap wrench to remove the housing (easier said than done). Some tapping on all sided with a mallet may help to loosen the grip that has set up over time.

Put a thick coat of the silicon material on the gasket (both sides) as well as the threads.

Set the new filter dead center in the housing base. Carefully line it up to the top and screw in. If it tips, center and start again.

Tighten hand tight. Turn the water back on. Wait to see if there is a leak. Wipe off the housing to see. If there is a leak, tighten a little more. If that doesn't do it, turn off water, remove the housing, apply more silicon and recheck that the filter is centered and repeat.

Just an additional option instead of purchasing a strap wrench if you will only use it for this filter.... I've used a good leather belt to loosen the canister. I've owned this filter for 9yrs and it always sticks! even with the silicone grease! Bad design!
