The absolute best way -- and really easy way -- to do this is to turn the mower up in a vertical orientation (standing up on its rear end). However, you shouldn't do that without first draining the oil and gas and removing the battery (and mower deck, of course). If you do this, changing the drive belt is super-easy, whereas it's very difficult otherwise. Because of the need to remove battery, gas and oil, I strongly recommend changing the drive belt once per year (at the beginning of the season). That way, you will typically change the belt on a planned basis, not when it breaks unexpectedly in the midst of mowing. Here's the procedure:
1) Remove the mower deck (otherwise known as the "mower housing" -- where the blade resides, in case you didn't know) and deck belt.
2) Remove the bolt and nut attaching the transaxle bracket to the rear of the chassis (also known as the "frame assembly").
3) Drain oil (better if you've run the engine for a few minutes beforehand, of course, to warm the engine -- this will better release gunk in the oil).
4) Drain most of the fuel from the gas tank using a siphon hose. (As long as you get all but 1/2" or so of the fuel out of the bottom of the tank, that should be enough).
5) Remove the seat and the battery.
6) Fully depress the clutch/brake pedal and use a wooden block of appropriate size to lock the clutch/brake pedal into the fully depressed position.
7) On a flat, level surface (concrete garage or carport floor) lift the front of the mower by hand until it rests in a 90-degree vertical position. As you raise the front of the mower up, it's a good idea to place a foot on the transaxle to minimize rear wheel roll until you rest the mower onto its rear end. The mower will actually sit stably and safely in this position. If you're concerned about scratching the paint finish on the rear body of the mower, you can position an old blanket or carpet scrap there first. (With the mower deck and battery removed, the front of the mower is actually pretty lightweight and quite easy to lift by hand.) Without battery and mower deck, most of the weight is at the rear of the mower, so it will sit in a quite stable configuration, resting on the body rear end and the towing point at the lower rear of the chassis.
8) Loosen the four transaxle bolts/nuts that mount the transaxle to the underside of the chassis enough to separate the transaxle from the chassis by 1/2 inch or so. This will serve to provide the spacing necessary to get the drive belt into position between the transaxle pulley and the underside of the chassis.
9) Loosen the bolt attaching the right side of the belt guide to the chassis by one or two turns, then loosen and completely remove the bolt attaching the left side of the belt guide to the chassis.
9) Remove the old drive belt and replace with the new drive belt, making sure to run the new belt appropriately around all the pulleys and belt guides.
10) Reassemble everything in reserve order.
While this seems like a lot to do in order to change the drive belt, it's actually much easier this way than try to do it from underneath. Working on the underside of the mower with it oriented vertically makes the drive belt changeout incredibly easy, and the disassembly and reassembly mentioned here actually requires a lot less time -- and a lot less aggravation -- than trying to change the belt by working from the underside with the mower oriented horizontally. This procedure also gives you a good opportunity to clean, inspect, tighten and lube the mechanical parts under the mower.
To change the motion drive belt on a Huskee 42 riding mower, first, ensure the mower is turned off and the key is removed. Raise the mower deck and remove the belt covers to access the old belt. Take note of the belt routing, then remove the old belt from the pulleys and replace it with the new one, ensuring it follows the same path. Finally, reassemble the covers and lower the deck before testing the mower.
Changing the deck belt on the Huskee IT4200 lawn mower involves working around the spring and 2 belt drive guides in the motor area. Properly loading the spring before the guides is the secret to success.
To remove the rear drive pulley from a Huskee riding lawn mower while it's still on the mower, first ensure the mower is turned off and the battery is disconnected for safety. Remove the belt from the pulley by loosening the tensioner if necessary. Then, use a socket wrench to remove the bolts securing the pulley to the shaft. If the pulley is stuck, gently tap it with a rubber mallet to help loosen it.
To change the drive belt on a Bosch Rotak 36 mower, first, ensure the mower is unplugged for safety. Remove the mower housing by unscrewing the necessary screws, and then carefully detach the old belt from the motor and drive pulley. Install the new belt by threading it around the pulleys, ensuring it is properly aligned, and then reassemble the mower housing securely. Finally, test the mower to ensure the new belt is functioning correctly.
To replace the mower deck belt on a Huskee LT 4200 riding mower, first ensure the mower is turned off and safely positioned. Remove the deck by disconnecting the lift lever and any retaining pins or bolts. Once the deck is off, locate the old belt, remove it from the pulleys, and then install the new belt by following the path indicated in the owner's manual. Finally, reattach the deck and ensure everything is secured before testing the mower.
To change the drive belt on a Hustler zero turn mower, first, ensure the mower is turned off and the key is removed. Raise the mower deck and secure it, then locate the drive belt routing diagram, usually found on the mower. Remove the old belt by detaching it from the pulleys and idler, and install the new belt by following the routing diagram in reverse. Finally, double-check that the belt is properly seated on all pulleys before lowering the deck and testing the mower.
Impossible to answer without knowing year, make & model, of mower.
You can change the drive belt, on your lawnmower, by loosening the tensioner pulley. With the tensioner pulley, loosen the drive belt will come off and can be replaced.
To change the drive belt on a Hustler Raptor mower, first, ensure the mower is turned off and the key is removed. Raise the mower deck to gain access to the belt and remove the belt cover. Carefully release the tension on the belt by moving the tensioner arm, then remove the old belt from the pulleys. Finally, install the new belt by routing it according to the diagram, reattach the cover, and restore tension before testing the mower.
To change the drive belt on a JX75 mower, first, disconnect the spark plug wire for safety. Remove the mower deck by unscrewing the necessary bolts, then take off the old drive belt from the pulleys. Install the new belt by threading it through the pulleys in the correct path, ensuring it's seated properly. Finally, reattach the mower deck and reconnect the spark plug wire before testing the mower.
To change the drive belt on a Toro LX 420, first, ensure the mower is turned off and disconnected from the power source. Remove the mower deck by releasing the retaining pins and disconnecting the belt from the engine pulley. Then, locate the drive belt, remove it from the pulleys, and replace it with the new belt, ensuring it is properly routed. Finally, reattach the mower deck and reconnect the power source before testing the mower.
To change the drive belt on a John Deere 260 lawn mower, first, ensure the mower is turned off and disconnected from the power source. Remove the mower deck by detaching any necessary bolts and pins, then locate and remove the old drive belt from the pulleys. Install the new belt by routing it according to the diagram usually found on the mower or in the owner's manual, ensuring it fits snugly on all pulleys. Finally, reattach the mower deck and double-check the belt alignment before testing the mower.
