I have a "N" reg 1996 106 1.5 Diesel, and the speedo developed an intermittent fault, I changed the speedo sensor but that did not repair the problem. I was quoted over £160 for a replacement speedo from my local dealer and I recently purchased the car for only £450 so that not economically viable. I purchased a complete dash with the speedo, fuel gauge, clock etc from Ebay from a car breaker for only £12 delivered!

You will need a spline key set, these are similar to Allen keys but have spline heads, Halfords or car part shops sell these for about £10 a set, you will NOT be able to remove the screws without these they are essential.

1) Using a Philips type screwdriver remove the 3 screws holding the 2 piece ignition shroud together these are located just under the steering wheel, you only need to remove the top section for access, leave the bottom section in situ.

2) Using the spline key remove the 3 screws holding the piece of trim around the instrument cluster, 1 at the top, 2 either side, don't loose the screws!

3) You will now see another 2 screws holding the instrument cluster either side at the bottom, these are a little awkward to reach though, using the spline key also remove these.

4) Now the instrument cluster will now pull out, be careful now as you do not want to damage any of the wiring or push on connectors.

5) As the instrument panel starts to come free, you will see the wiring and push on connectors, at the back of the push on connectors are white coloured securing lugs, these have to be pushed forward to allow the connectors to pull off.

6) Remove all the push on connectors from memory I had 4, and the instrument panel will now come out with a little bit of jiggling around.

7) Replacement is just a reverse order, please don't forget to check everything is working by turning on the ignition BEFORE replacing trim, screw etc.

Estimated removal time less than 1 hour, good luck,

Steve

I repaired speedo in mine P206 1.4 1998, unfortunately I have no photos, but try to disassemble the instruments board and get to the speedo from its back side, you should see the speedo drive (it is a small DC motor with gearbox), the drive is enclosed in a transparent plastic cover

when you open it, you should find little spring, two small gears - one of them has small metal shaft and the other one should be mounted on a really small plastic shaft, which is a part of the transparent plastic cover (anatomy enough :) hope you still understand)

my problem was, that the plastic shaft was broken

I repaired it in Mc Gyver style :) using a paperclip, which was small enough in diameter and matches the hole in the small gear

I drilled a small hole exactly in the same place, where was the plastic shaft before and after that I heat up a small piece of the paperclip and insert it very carefully to its place using a little pressure

after this surgery just assembly everything together and put it back into the car

when you connect the instruments board you will have to adjust the speedo hand

hope you can understand everything, good luck!
