You need to consult with a shop manual, the job is complicated.

You can probably do it yourself if you are determined enough. it is rather complicated though you have to remove valve cover, serpentine belt, idler pulley, a/c compressor bracket, power steering bracket, crank pulley, probably some other stuff too and that's to just remove the cover off the engine. You have to have some special tools too such as a a toque wrench and some pullers. if you are not too experienced with working on cars i would leave this to a professional. you can cause a lot of damage to your engine if you don't do it correctly and if its not alligned properly you'll have to do it all over again. the fact that you're asking how to do this you probably should leave this to a mechanic

User Avatar

Answer to timing belt for 1996 AltimaThey don't have timing belts. At least mine doesn't. Double check your manual or call a Nissan dealer & ask to be sure. There is not a timing belt on this model or any year before or after this model. You have a 2.4L engine with a timing chain and there is no reason to replace the timing chain unless it is making noise. The chain is at least rated at a 7-10 hour job and should not be considered for repair due to the damage that can arise if not careful.

Ford Ka's have a timing chain, not belt.
