To change an alternator:
1. Remove the battery ground wire.
2. Unplug or disconnect the wires to the alternator.
3. Loosen the adjuster bolt and if needed the mounting bolt so the alternator will move to the side to take the drive belt off.
4. Take out the bolts and lift out the alternator.
Installation is the reverse of the above. Be sure to adjust the belt to proper tension.
The voltage regulator is inside the alternator on a 1984 Chevy.
To change the alternator in your 1986 Chevrolet Celebrity: 1, Remove the battery ground cable. 2. Unplug remove the wiring from the alternator. 3. Loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place. Remove the drive belt. 4. Remove the bolts and the alternator will pull out. Reverse the process to reinstall the new alternator.
To change the alternator belt an a 1985 Chevy Celebrity: 1. Loosen the adjuster bolt and the mounting bolt. 2. Move the alternator to release the belt tension and remove the belt. Reverse to reinstall a new belt.
The choke light came on in my 1984 Celebrity when the alternator belt broke thus not charging the battery. Replacing the belt caused the choke light to go out. Since then I have noticed that whenever the alternator is not putting out enough voltage the choke light comes on.
Looking over the right front fender on a V6 it is at the front of the engine on your right side.

To change a belt in general: 1. Loosen the adjuster bolt and the mounting bolt. 2. Move the unit in so the belt can be removed. Note the routing of the belt. 3. Install the new belt, adjust the tension and tighten the bolts. If the belt you are changing is behind other belts you will have to do them in turn.
