There are two ink cartridges; one for black and one for color. The black ink cartridge will be used for mono color printing (documents) and the color cartridge working in parallel with the black cartridge will produce color images. The black ink cartridge is required when printing colors, so the only time you could use on, would be the black one for black and white images on paper.
