What does the godpearnts say at the baptism?

The Godparents make promises at a Baptism. They say they will look after the child and teach them the ways of God. If the parents of the child aren't Catholic, then the Godparents are the ones who bring the child up as a Catholic (if that's what the parents want them to become) and tell them all they need to know. The godparents are friends in faith who can be turned to in times of doubt, confusion or questioning. Their goal is to show the child being baptised the ways and truth about God.

Why do we celebrate baptism?

During the Baptism ceremony, godparents are asked to commit to helping the parents live out their faith responsibilities to their children. Godparents, then, are very special in the life of their godchild. They are people whom you choose with great care, for they will be examples and role models for years to come. To help parents make wise choices for the privilege of being godparents, the Catholic Church has specific requirements.

Do protestants have godparents?

The role of the godparent is to assist the parents in bringing up their children in the practice of the Catholic Faith. Therefore to be eligible to be a "godparent" it is necessary that the person be a practicing catholic. A Protestant may be a "Christian Witness" but may not serve in the capacity of godparent in the Baptism ceremony. There must be at least one person who serves as a godparent.

What is Catholic tradition for the godparents?

Why does godfather have to be Catholic in Catholic baptism?

When an infant is baptized in the Catholic Church, the parents choose godparents who are tasked with overseeing the spiritual upbringing of the child (should the parents' guidance not be sufficient). When the child is baptized, the godparent(s) make an oath to raise the child in the Catholic faith, which is clearly something they cannot promise if they do not believe it for themselves.

What if there is no baptism certificate from orthodox faith can you still convert to Catholic faith?

How many candles are needed for a baptism?

The ritual of baptism does not always require candles. John the Baptist and early Christians did not use candles. In most Roman Catholic rites, one candle is often used to represent the parents' responsibility to carry the faith to their child. Other candles used in such services may include those for godparents, family members, and friends. (see related Baptism link)

Do you keep your godparents if you change religion?

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules, but probably not. Although godparents are often thought of as purely symbolic, some believe that the godparents agree to help bring you up in the faith in which you were baptised.

Does baby need godparents to be baptized in catholic church?

No........but the baby should have a sponsor IF POSSIBLE. The Sponsor is appointed by the Parents (or Parent), or whoever stands in their place, or failing that, by the Parish Priest or Minister of Baptism. The Sponsor must be at least 16 years of age and a baptised catholic, but in an emergency situation, the age rule can be adjusted but that person must be a baptised catholic. A person of another faith can be a sponsor only if there is a catholic sponsor present as well and only as a witness. There is no mention of god parents grandparents in the Code of Church law relating to baptism.

What responsibilities do godparents have if the parents of the child are neither Christian or Catholic?

Choosing Godparents today doesn't mean much of anything with the exception of the parents regarding the couple highly enough to even ask them. Being a true Godparent years ago meant that the Godparents were there to help in any way they could and if both parents were to pass on then the Godparents were to take the child(ren) in as their own. Now it has simply become a ritual. If the child was baptized as a Catholic, then its the responsibility of the parents and the godparents to ensure that the child is raised a Catholic. During the baptism the Parents and Godparent(s) would make a VOW on behalf of the child. So if the Parents don't fulfill their vows or changed their faith or died then it would be the God parent(s) duties to ensure that their Godchild's baptismal vows is fulfilled...(by teaching them of their christian duties as a Catholic and being an example of faith and prayer etc) It doesn't mean that by being a Godparent you have a legal responsibility for the child, but you do have a spiritual Responsibility....thats why its called God-Parent...Then when the child's older they'll renew their baptismal vows through Confirmation..
