On that year of 5-series. Yes it would have to be the same year and series because the '89 525i has the M20 engine whereas the rest of the 5 series, '90 and up have the M50 engine. I had to replace the head gasket in my '89 525I and I installed a brand new head and cam since I had everything out of it.
