How do you change oil on a 85 horsepower Mercury outboard motor?

With a large Flathead screwdriver loosen the large screw at the top of the gearcase. Next get a drain pan to collect the used oil and put it under the lower unit. Loosen the bottom(drain) screw from the bottom of the lower unit and remove it. Let the oil drain for at least 5 minutes, more if it is very thick and slow draining. Check to see if large particles of metal are present, or if water is in the old oil. If either of these conditions exist, you are in need of further servicing. After draining, using clean oil fill the unit FROM BOTTOM TO THE TOP, until oil comes out the top screw hole. Now put in the top screw first, then quickly replace the bottom screw. Tighten both screws to prevent leakage.
