Jack up the front of your car ( I use the pinch welds) and put it on jackstands. Slide under the car from the front. ( you will want your car to be cold, or atleast let it sit an hour or so to cool down ) look at where your exhaust pipe goes up to the manifolds. You should have a gap you can look up at the back of the engine block ( flashlight or droplight a necessity) the oil sender is on the back of the block, it should have one wire going to it in a black loom. Unplug the wire, depending on your particular year and type of sender you may need a special socket ($6 at O'reily's) other wise it will have flats near the threads to remove with a wrench (17mm if i recall correctly, may be smaller ) turn in counter clockwise to remove from engine block. Put Teflon tape/paste on the threads of the new sender and install in reverse order
Hmmm
You need to "drop" the tank.

The sending unit is located on the pickup tube inside the gas tank.
The temperature sending unit on a 96 cavalier is on the front of the engine. It is just to the left of the alternator.
Probably the sender unit in the tank is broken. Removable from the trunk on the right side under carpet. You can test it with an ohmmeter on the tank connector.
Unit is incorporated in the door latch and is not serviced. You'll have to replace the latch assy.. Where is the sender for the automatic doorlock?
