Make sure car is in safe place and block the wheels, make sure it;s in park. Write down your radio stations, they will be erased. Remove the black (negative) cable using a 7 MM wrench. You will have to twist the clamp. Try to expand it with a screwdriver in the little slot. Next remove the red (positive) cable the same way. Loosen the air cleaner box using a 10 MM socket and a flat screw driver on the flex hose clamp and move it rearward to allow you to loosen the battery hold down bolt in the back of the battery. Ford did not lubricate this and it will likely break. If it does you will have to drill it out, but use some WD-40 or other solvent and let it soak first and maybe you can avoid that. Installation is just reversing what you did to get it out.
The Ford Escape Hybrid carries two batteries: a standard low-voltage battery and a high-voltage hybrid battery. The low voltage battery is an ordinary vehicular 12 volt battery used to power the starter motor. It should only be replace with a specific battery from your dealer. i found out this the hard way when AAA came out to replace the battery with a standard one and my car started to have issues. only replace from dealer!! The high voltage hybrid battery, however, is another matter entirely. Currently, the new battery and the labor to install it into the vehicle's high voltage power bus is approximately $7,000. Hybrid batteries are designed to function for the life of the car, usually for 150,000 to 200,000 miles before requiring replacement, and battery failures are statistically uncommon. If you believe your battery system is having difficulties, the high-voltage power bus should be run through diagnostics by a Ford dealer to determine the source of any problems. Ford typically guarantees its hybrid batteries for eight years, so your vehicle should fall under the warranty rules for replacement should the need arise. Consult your dealer for more information.
The hybrid can run on alternative fuels, and the regular one cannot. Wrong! What you are describing is the Flex Fuel Escape. The Escape Hybrid is a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) which uses a battery and an electric motor to supplement the power, and therefore the gas mileage of the gas engine.

If you require a hybrid battery repair, then chances are that you probably require a new hybrid battery as well. The entire process of changing a battery within a hybrid vehicle can be quite time consuming and expensive. A full set of batteries for a hybrid car will cost anywhere from $2,500 to $3,500. In addition, there are often fees charged by dealerships to install these batteries for hybrid cars.
