if its anything like my 2000 savage, you need to remove the tank to get at the bolts that hold the chrome cover in place. Once you remove the chrome head cover, you should have pretty easy access to the spark plug.

First, remove the driver's seat. There are 3 screws holding the speedometer to the tank that need to be removed as well. Disconnect the vent hose at the top of the fuel tank. Turn the gas supply valve off and disconnect the gas line. Disconnect the electrical plug at the back of the tank and remove the bolt that holds it to the frame. Remove the tank and you can now access the plugs.

To change the spark plugs on a Yamaha r6 2001 you start by removing the tank off completely. After you remove the tank, then remove the 4 hoses that is connected to the air box to remove it. Once removed, take the plastic linear out and will see the head of the motor. Lastly, just pull the spark plug wires out.
