( partly opened the Driver side tail light of highlander 2008 .) Open the small plastic panel inside the trunk area behind the tail light with a flat head screw driver , then there are 2 long bolts coming from the light and the nuts on them very difficult to open because of the location , actually i am able to open only one , the lower one is not even visible or locatable . the other 3 catchers , one on the side of the vehicle and 2 on the outer side of light but are on the rear side facing to the front of the vehicle. so presuming the earlier 2 bolts are open , light assemble is supposed to be pulled back and the light will be free from these 3 catchers , the side one is sliding catcher other 2 are pull back kind .
But the dammm... 2nd nut & bolt supposedly around the lower inner side of the light ( lower right side of light ) is not even locatable, so light never came out off the body ...
Writing in hope that some one else might find the other bolt....

I have a 2004 highlander. I just finished the replacement. It was very easy. Open the back door to the highlander, remove the plastic compartment cover. You will expose the nuts and bolts that hold the asssembly to the car. Remove the nuts - be careful not to drop any inside the cavity. Once you have all the nuts removed, you can remove the lamps and pull the tail light assembly off. Put the new assembly on, replace nuts, and reinstall the lamps. Easy.
How do you change the rear brake light on a 2002 Toyota Highlander?
The bulb on the highlander is in a plastic holder that screws ? snaps into the hole in the tail light from the inside of the vehicle. On each side just in line with the brake light is a small pannel that just snaps out of and into place. Remove this small panel and behind it you will see 3 bulb holders in a verticle row . Remove the one that is out by turning the bulb holder counter clock wise (to the left) CAUTION : you can drop the bulb holder and it will fall down into the lower finder well and is near impossible to retrieve. It is best to cover the hole in the finder with some tape or ?? . Replace the bulb by pulling the old one out and insert the new bulb. Put the bulb holder back into the hole , align the ears with the proper slots in the tail light and turn to the right until it stops and is in the same position as the others. Replace the small panel and you are done.
