my friend changed the battery in his 05 outback and now all the dash lights are on and the car wont go into gear. what happened?

Check the grounds on headlights
See "Rear Combination Lights" on page 61 of chapter 11 "Maintenance and Service" in the "OWNER'S MANUAL".....
See "Rear Combination Lights" on page 54 in chapter 11 "Maintenance and Service" of the "OWNER'S MANUAL".....
Take them out then put the new ones in

It may be a fuse.
