By default, Word uses single line spacing. You can change it to other spacing amounts. You can also change the gap between paragraphs.
The Ctrl-5 shortcut key will do it. It can also be done in the line spacing setting in the paragraph settings.
Double spacing is set to 2.0 line spacing.
