Remove the center retaining nut on the tensioner. You will need to use something to jam the pulley, so it will not turn.

Why does your timing belt on your Zx2 keep shredding?

previous answer has been left intact to point out information which is incorrect and costly if not doing these repairs yourselfthe timing belt could be shredding for a number of reasons.1 - the timing belt tensioner was not properly set. Some people have set the tensioner until they thought the belt was tight. This is not the correct way to set the tension. To set the tension properly you should first locate the part of the tensioner which is inserted into a square hole just beneath the intake cam gear. This tab will have a straight line on it. Now turn the tensioner adjuster with an allen wrench. As the tensioner adjuster is turned, the other alignment tab on the tensioner will move toward the previous part of the tensioner in the square hole. When the straight line is between the u-shaped alignment tab the tensioner will be properly aligned. At this point, hold the position so that it does not move, then tighten the bolt on the tensioner (10mm wrench).2 - the timing pulleys are worn and require replacement. Inspect the pulleys for wear on the surfaces as well as play in them. If they are not flat and smooth on the surface, they need to be replaced. If there is play in the internal bearings, again, they need to be replaced. The zx2 used two different timing sets depending on the date of manufacture. The early versions had a timing kit which used 3 timing pulleys. The newer version's timing kit only used two pulleys. An easy way to determine which version of timing kit is required can be done by looking at the bolt holding the timing pulley next to the tensioner pulley. If the bolt is inside the timing pulley and needs a hex attachment, then the engine uses the 3 pulleys timing set. If the bolt on the timing pulley can be accessed with a socket or box end wrench, then it uses the 2 pulley timing set.A common weak point for the 3 pulley timing set is the lower pulley located near the crank gear. Due to its size and location, this pulley wears quickly when compared to the other pulleys. To access this 3rd pulley requires the removal of the lower crank pulley and the lower timing cover.3 - timing set/pulleys not properly installed. It is important to install the timing kit. The two different timing kits use different sized pulleys. If the incorrect ones are used the tensioner will not be able to be properly set. It is also important to ensure that the pulleys are properly installed onto the car.4 - the timing cover was not properly reinstalled after being removed. This part is soft plastic. If this part is not properly installed, the belt will wear grooves into it. Wear on the side of the belt may also occur5 - the washer on the lower crank gear is bad. This should be checked when the timing belt it replaced. A bad washer will allow the crank gear to move and allow the belt to move making it possible to shred as it contacts the sides. There may be other reasons as well, but these are the most common. Please note: It is not necessary to replace the water pump if the timing belt is shredding. The water pump does not contact the timing belt in any way.VV previous answerMost of the time people only change the belt thinking that it will solve the problem. In most cases the problem is the water pump or the timing belt tensioner. The only way to solve the problem indefinitely is to buy the total timing belt kit made by gates. It is a little more pricy, but this will solve the problem most of the time. thank you Greg Stephens S&S Auto 256-442-8773

How do you change water pump on 98 vauxhall vectra 1.8 petrol?

Its a relatively easy job if you have ever done a timing belt replacement before. It is a case of removing air filter housing and then the upper timing belt cover, removing drivers front wheel, lower/inner plastic wheel arch cover. Turn the lower crank shaft pulley and align the top pulley marks up and the crank shaft pulley timing mark to the lower timing belt cover, once aligned you will need a special camshaft locking tool (also its recommended to use a flywheel locking tool, but isn't necessary) once top pulleys secured with locking tool then remove lower crankshaft pulley. Then replace the bolt for the crankshaft pulley and then remove lower timing cover. Slacken off the timing belt tensioner pulley and use a 5mm Allen key and turn tensioner anti-clockwise to slacken belt off completely. replace ALL tensioner pulleys and replace belt. This isn't a novice/amatuer job and is NOT easy. there is special procedures for replacement and they vary from engine to model specs. The tools required are above a standard home tool kit and require "E" drive sockets. hope this helps

How do you change the timing belt on a 1993 Mercury Villager with a 3 liter engine?

CAUTIONS: 1993 and 1994-96 timing belts are non-interchangeable. 1993 belt design was changed from a square or trapezoid type to a half circle or round type for 1994-96, This design extends service life of timing belt from 60,000 miles to 105,000 miles. Failure to install correct timing belt may result in a "whining" noise from engine compartment after replacement. Do not interchange individual components (timing belts, sprockets or tensioner spring assembles) between 1993 and 1994-96 model vehicles. These parts are interchangeable as a set only. REMOVAL Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley (tensioner) bolts, then idler pulley (tensioner). Remove upper radiator hose bracket bolt. Loosen two upper radiator hose clamps, then remove upper hose and bracket. Remove coolant bypass hose between thermostat housing and intake manifold coolant outlet. Disconnect main wiring harness from upper front cover (timing belt) cover, then remove eight upper timing belt cover bolts, then the upper cover, Fig. 20. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front wheel and tire assembly and splash shield. Use strap wrench tool No. D85L-6000-A, or equivalent, to hold water pump pulley while removing water pump pulley bolts. Remove water pump pulley from water pump. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove five lower timing belt cover attaching bolts and the cover. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction to align crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks, Fig. 21. If timing belt is to be reused, mark direction of rotation. Loosen timing belt tensioner nut, then remove timing belt. CAUTION: With timing belt removed, avoid turning camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact. INSTALLATION Using suitable Allen wrench, turn timing belt tensioner clockwise until timing belt tensioner spring is fully extended, then temporarily torque timing belt tensioner nut to 32-43 ft. lbs. Install timing belt. If new belt, ensure white lines on belt align with seal plate (rear timing belt cover) timing marks and timing belt arrow is pointing away from engine block. If reusing timing belt, ensure removal directional arrow is pointing in correct direction. There should be 40 timing belt teeth between left and right camshaft sprockets and 43 teeth between lefthand camshaft sprocket and crankshaft timing belt sprocket. While holding timing belt tensioner pulley in position with suitable hex wrench, loosen tensioner nut. Allow timing belt tensioner to tension belt. Using suitable hex wrench, turn timing belt tensioner 70-80 degrees clockwise, then torque timing belt tensioner nut to 32-43 ft. lbs. Rotate crankshaft clockwise twice and align No. 1 piston to compression stroke TDC. Apply 22 lbs. of force on timing belt between righthand camshaft sprocket and timing belt tensioner. Using suitable hex wrench, hold timing belt tensioner, then loosen tensioner nut and adjust timing belt as follows: Install suitable 0.0138 inch and .5 inch wide feeler gauge between timing belt tensioner, Fig. 22. Installing Feeler Gauge Between Timing Belt & Tensioner Turn crankshaft clockwise to position feeler gauge between timing belt tensioner and timing belt. Torque timing belt tensioner nut to 32-43 ft. lbs. Turn crankshaft clockwise to remove feeler gauge. Rotate crankshaft sprocket clockwise twice and align No. 1 piston to TDC compression stroke. Apply 22 lbs. of force on timing belt between right and lefthand crankshaft sprockets. Using suitable tool, measure timing belt deflection, 0.51-0.59 inch should be indicated. If not as indicated, repeat step 9. If deflection is still not as indicated, belt may be stretched and have to be replaced. Install lower engine front (timing belt) cover. Install crankshaft and water pump pulley. Install righthand splash shield and wheel assembly. Lower vehicle and install upper timing cover. Connect main wiring harness to upper timing belt cover. Install coolant bypass hose between thermostat housing and intake manifold coolant outlet. Install upper radiator hose, then upper radiator hose bracket. Install A/C compressor drive belt tensioner, then install and adjust accessory drive belts. Check and adjust ignition timing as required.

How do you change a timing tensioner on a 1997 200SX?

The timing chain tensioner for the 1.6L engine? If so it has two. One is located behind the inspection panel located above the fan belt main pulley just under the valve cover. Two nuts and a six 10mm bolts hold it in place. It is sealed with silicone engine sealant. Support the engine from underneath and remove the top motor mount for easier access. Two bolts hold it in place. Auto parts stores sell it for around $50. The second tensioner in found in the lower block area behind the timing chain cover/ water pump. That tensioner is made up of two components. The spring tensioner which can be removed from the engine easily. Remove the two bolts on the side if the engine directly behind the water pump output and it pulls right out. The other component is the nylon tensioner track or guide that actually pushes against the timing chain. That is the part that wears out and requires the cover to be removed. To remove the cover you have to remove all the 10 mm bolts including the two in the top from the head and two in the bottom from the oil pan. There is also two 12mm bolts near center the cover near the water pump. Removal of this cover my damage the head gasket part that seals the head above to the cover. I have always pulled the head off the engine and replaced the head gasket when opening the timing chain cover. I don't know if it is possible not to without causing oil leaks by not replacing the head gasket. Here is a link to a photo showing the upper cover removed. http://www.flickr.com/photos/92225127@N00/534508640/in/photostream/

Replacing a timing belt on a Ford Contour?

Replacing the timing belt on a Ford Contour involves removing the right motor mount, removing the serpentine belt, crankshaft pulley, and idler pulleys, removing the upper and lower timing belt covers and loosing the timing belt tensioner. It would be wise to replace the tensioner. The whole kit is about $160. You have to buy a timing tool to properly do the job. Cost about $45. Upon installation the camshafts need to be aligned with the crankshaft using the top dead center timing mark on the crankshaft pulley and slots in the crank shafts. That's where the timing tools come in. The kit has step by step instructions. Total parts will run about $200, but a mechanic is gonna charge $5-600 so it's worth it.
