Lower motor to full down, place drain pan under motor.
Loosen and remove lower screw, then remove upper screw.
Allow to drain completely (about 1/2 hour).
You will need a hand operated oil pump with screw adapter fitting for threads in lower screw hole, and at least a quart of lower unit gear oil.
Insert fitting and pump gear oil until it runs from top hole. Replace top screw (with new gasket).
Remove oil adapter and replace lower screw(with new gasket).
Done.

- Trim the motor down and turn the engine so the drain plug is pointed at a down angle to drain. The drain plug is located on the port side of the engine shaft. On a Merc 90 it's the only bolt on the lower half so you can't miss it.
- Remove the engine cowl. (top cover) There is a latch in the front and rear.
- Remove the yellow drain fill cap for venting.
- Place oil pan under the bottom of the outboard and loosen the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain for a minimum of 45 minutes.
- Locate oil filter on the starboard side of the engine. Place a rag under the oil filter to catch and absorb any oil that may leak out from the filter. If this is the first oil change the filter will be very, very tight from the factory. Take care when removing the filter that you don't crush it. It will be very hard to remove it if you do.
- Once removed, be sure rubber gasket has been removed with the oil filter and has not been left behind. Place small film of fresh oil on the new filter and install HAND TIGHT.
- Replace drain plug.
- Fill engine, replace yellow cap. Replace cowl.

∙ 15y agoFirst drain all the existing oil from the base pan. Be sure to put the screw back into the base pan when the oil is drained. Remove the old filter. Then add the new oil (2L). Insert the new oil filter. Be sure to add alittle oil to the Oring of the filter before installation. There you go
