drain your radiator about 1/2 way (drain plug petcock is located in the corner of the radiator on the engine side). follow the top hose from the radiator to the water pump. at the water pump the hose will be attached to an aluminum elbow. the elbow is attached to the pump with two bolts. this is the thermostat housing. unbolt the housing, remove the thermostat, being sure to note orientation of thermostat before removing (there is a right and wrong direction), replace with new tstat (in correct direction). you may or may not need a gasket/o-ring. if so, make sure the old one is cleaned off or removed. reattach housing. while you're at it you may as well flush the system before refilling. in either case make sure you top off the cooling system and double check the level after a few miles of driving.
The spring on the thermostat goes down towards the engine.
