The water pump is driven by the cam belt which must be replaced every 90,000 miles. Therefore the cam belt must be removed in order to replace the water pump. As this is an interference engine if the cam belt is reinstalled incorrectly and you attempt to start the engine there will be serious engine damage to valves and possible pistons. For this reason I highly recommend you have this repair done by an expert unless you know what you are doing. There is also a balance shaft belt that must be replaced every 90,000 miles. This is why the water pump, cam belt, and balance shaft belt are all replace every 90,000 miles.
