1. Are you absolutely certain that the timing chain NEEDS to be replaced? Generally, a timing chain is only replaced when rebuilding the engine. Saturn timing chains generally last until the engine has worn to the point that other internal work should be performed.

2. If you are CERTAIN that you need a timing chain, the easiest way would be

  • remove the engine from the vehicle, but you CAN simply pull the passenger side fender cover and try to work in that tight space.
  • Pull the dampener pulley (that's the big pulley that drives the serpentine belt.
  • remove the front engine cover. In the Saturn it is also the oil pump.
  • remove the timing chain tensioner assembly and make certain that you do not misplace any of the internal pieces... the spring will fly across the room if you aren't careful.
  • Remove the timing chain guides from both sides of the engine and the third one from the head (twin cam only).
  • turn the engine to #1TDC. note the timing holes on the camshaft(s). They should line up with a matching hole on the head when the engine is at #1TDC.
  • Disconnect the cam sprocket(s) and remove them, taking care to not turn the crankshaft or camshaft(s).
  • Put the new timing chain and sprocket(s) in place, making certain that the camshaft sprocket(s) line up with the alignment hole(s). This step assumes that you have not turned the crankshaft away from #1TDC. Tighten the sprockets.
  • Install the new timing chain slides in the original position.
  • Use the retainer to hold the chain tensioner while you install it. Sometimes a helper can be beneficial in this procedure.
  • Install a NEW dampener pulley oil seal.
  • Replace the engine cover/oil pump assembly, making certain that all surfaces are clean and that new gaskets have been used.
  • Install the dampener pulley, making certain that the key is properly installed.
  • If necessary, re-install the engine.

When should you change the timing belt on a 97 Saturn wagon?

Never. The Saturn S series vehicles used a timing chain instead of a timing belt. And the chain is inside the engine, bathed in oil to keep it lubricated. The timing chain should be replaced whenever you rebuild the engine.

When to change timing chain on a Saturn Ion 2004?

A timing chain should last the life of the engine. Timing chains are INSIDE the engine and as such are constantly oiled. By the time the timing chain and/or tensioning mechanism is worn out, it's about time to rebuild the engine.

You have a 95 Saturn do you need to change timing chain?

Depends on miles on the engine - I traded in a 95 SL1 with 206,000 miles with the original timing chain still on the engine. My impression is that under normal circumstances, you should get at least 175,000 miles on a Saturn timing chain.

When do you need to change the timing chain of your 2001 Saturn sl2?

You are correct that the SL2 uses a timing chain. However, since it uses a timing chain it does not need to be replaced as does the timing BELT. In general, a timing chain should last the life of the engine.

The Saturn sl2 does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain. And under most conditions it does not need replacing.
