run your van on a ramp or just jack it up , you have two oil pans under your van one is your oil pan which is the pan that holds your oil the same with the transmission oil pan the difference between the two is one has a drain plug the other does not the one with the plug is the engine oil the other one is the trans pan you change the oil by removing 16 to 24 bolts that hold up your trans pan with your van jacked up you need loosen all the bolts removing the back ones or until fluid starts to drain then you slowly begin to take out the bolts from the back side and start removing the bolts from back to front until you have taken all the bolts out you need to leave one bolt up front so the pan does not fall and hit you cause your pan still has oil in it brake lose your pan remove it
remove the trans pan and change the trans filter at the same time
Check for: low trans fluid parking brake engaged broken or dislodged axle shaft transmission problem
What type of trans oil does and how many lts
if you change trans fluid REGULARLY like you should, flushing is not necessary
trans fluid
Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid in the 1999 Ford Windstar power steering ( according to the Owner Guide )
manual trans 3.27qts
You have to fill the trans fluid through the dipstick tube.
Only enough to reach the full mark on the dipstick.Generally that would mean about 4-6 qts on the Continental.
If your car is the 2.4 version then I can help. Under your intake tube their is this little RED Cap on top of your transmission. You have to drain your trans first then unscrew the RED cap and refill transmission with 4 quarts of trans fluid.
4.7 quarts
It is a special manual trans fluid for the NV 4500 transmission that is available at both Dodge and GM dealers.
