Keep your owner's manual handy throughout repair. Remove spark plug wires from plugs, and place the outboard in forward gear. Loosen the shift shaft lock nut and unscrew the coupler nut, making sure to mark the original location. Tilt outboard to the up position, and remove the bolts attaching the gearcase to the exhaust housing. Remove the gearcase from the exhaust housing and secure it upright in a bench vise. If there is corrosion or the outboard has been used in salt water, you may have to use some force to loosen the mating surfaces, gently tap the anti-ventilation place down using a soft faced hammer. Disassemble the water pumpt, and remove from the driveshaft, carefully noting the order of the parts. Use a water pump repair kits rather than just replacing the impeller. Replace all seals and gaskets, lower wear plate, pump housing insert and impeller. Use all the parts that came in the kit. Before assembling the pump, grease the housing and impeller, and grease the spines on the drive shaft. Assembly is the reverse. Install the gearcase on the exhaust housing. Make sure that the water tube lines up with the pump outlet. if the drive shaft and crankshaft splines do not line up, turn the propeller slightly to aid in alignment. Test the outboard for good water flow.
