Look, listen, and feel for breathing. Look for the chest rise and fall. Listen for breaths. If the victim is breathing, you will feel the breaths on your cheek as you are looking down the long axis of the body.

if you cant see their chest moving, you should put your cheek next to their mouth/nose and see if you can feel any breath. if you don't feel anything, call 911.

A little more...You can and should ALSO listen and feel for breath sounds or breath itself. If you're reasonably certain the victim isn't breathing, call for help and commence rescue breathing.

The method is to look, listen and feel.

1. Open the airway by placing one hand on the forehead, two fingers on the jaw and lifting. This tilts the airway open. Look inside for any signs of obstruction and clear it using a sweep of your fingers.

2. Listen by placing your ear directly above the patients mouth. Simultaneously, place one hand on the abdomen. Wait for at least ten seconds or until you hear or feel a breath.

Often, tilting the head back and opening the airway is sufficient for the unconscious patient to resume normal breathing.

If the patient is not breathing, begin rescue breathing (possibly also CPR if th patient does not have a pulse). Contact the emergency service immediately so that an ambulance can be dispatched as soon as possible. Gurgling or gasping does not indicate normal breathing. If this is the case, start rescue breaths anyway.

Look, Listen, & Feel. Look for the chest rise / fall, listen for breath sounds, feel for breaths on your cheek. Of course, the airway must be open (head tilt chin lift) prior to Look, Listen & Feel.
