I've heard that if you grip your right hand thumb with your left hand it somehow stops the gag reflex. It might be the other way around though, left thumb, right hand.
De-sensitize the throat with constant touching. Touch the back of your mouth with your toothbrushe whenever you brush your teeth. The other thing is to take you mind off of it. I 'point' my toes when at the dentist and it helps. Breathing through the nose is also a big help.
