You can use any of S.M.A.R.T. status monitoring tools, for example Active SMART http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/ or DriveHealth or HDDLife. All of them retrive the SMART status of the hard drive, analyse it or show it to the user, so one can check if the hard drive about to fail or it is completely OK.
Anyway, it's useful to know what the hard drive can say itself about its status.

Some hard drive perfomance can be improved through special utilities. Check the manufacture website for such software. I know that Western Digital has software to check and fix your hard drive.
The drive does not contain a valid signature
It could be a bad connection. Power down the computer, reseat all of the connectors to the hard drive. That means, pull the connector and re-connect it. Then when booting make sure that the drive is recognized by the BIOS. Boot into BIOS and check the drive status and the boot sequence making sure that the C drive is somewhere in the boot sequence. Most hard drive manufacturers offer a diagnostic application that can be loaded over the internet and run from a floppy or CD. If all else fails, go to the web site of the hard drive manufacturer and load a copy of the diagnostic and check out the hard drive. Hard drive warranties are quite liberal and you may be able to get a replacment drive if the old one has failed.
