Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.

A circuit breaker can be tested by overloading it. If it is a 15 amp breaker that you are suspicious of, it can be loaded quite easily. You will need a total load of 2000 watts. This test is not applicable to kitchen counter receptacles as they are split receptacles and can handle 1800 watts on both the top and bottom of the duplex receptacle. Make sure you have two appliances for the test. A kettle and a toaster will do very nicely. Plug them both into the same receptacle. After about 30 to 45 seconds the breaker should trip if it is working properly. If the breaker has not tripped after one minute disconnect the appliances from the receptacle. This breaker should be changed out. Remember the higher the breaker amperage the higher the trip wattage on the circuit will be. To check any breakers higher that 15 amps, be safe and get an electrician to do it for you.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

How do you stop breaker from kicking off when electric heater is on?

Check to see if the electric heater is drawing too much power for the breaker. If so, try using the heater on a different circuit or using a lower wattage heater. If the breaker continues to trip, consult an electrician to ensure the problem is properly addressed.

How can you check if you have 240 volts on a 30 amp two pole breaker?

To check if you have 240 volts on a 30 amp two pole breaker, you can use a digital multimeter set to measure voltage. Turn off the breaker, then test between the two breaker terminals and ground. If you read around 240 volts, it indicates that the breaker is providing the right voltage. If not, there may be an issue with the breaker or the wiring.

I noticed that my thermostat wasn't working so I took the cover off to see if the batteries were dead but there are no batteries in it I went outside to see if the AC was working and it wasn't HELP?

If your thermostat doesn't have batteries, it may be hardwired into your HVAC system. Check the circuit breaker to ensure it hasn't tripped. If the circuit breaker is fine, there might be an issue with the wiring or the thermostat itself. Calling a professional HVAC technician would be the best course of action to diagnose and fix the problem.

What would cause a 15 amp circuit breaker to throw after 5 hours?

Operating a breaker on a continuous current, close to the breaker's tripping point can cause this condition. Because the breaker is a thermal device the heat builds up over a time period. Check the breakers on either side of the faulting breaker. If these breakers are also warm from use they take away the heat sink effect and do not let the faulting breaker cool down. Check the current of the load to see how close you are operating to the breakers trip point. Over time the trip setting of the breaker can become lower to a point where it will not reset. Changing the breaker out should rectify this non resetting condition.

Can breaker be bad and still show voltage?

Yes, a breaker can still show voltage even if it is faulty. It may be due to a poor connection or a malfunctioning internal mechanism within the breaker. It's important to have a qualified electrician inspect and resolve the issue to ensure safety.

What is tripping relay?

You need to remove everything connected to the breaker and see if it still trips. If it does it is in the wiring or possibly a bad breaker. Disconnect load from breaker and see if it still trips. If so replace the breaker. If it still trips and is not the breaker then you will have to start pulling each outlet from wall and checking after disconnecting each outlet.
