You look for what suits you best. If you are a beginner, an older, gentler pony is best. If you are more advanced, you just look for what you think would work best for you. Always talk to the owners and see what the pony is like when being handled before taking it home.

∙ 15y agoIf you're buying for a child with minimal riding experience buy a small horse, not a pony they can be stubborn and children usually grow out of them when they are 11 or 12 years old.

If you're buying for a child that has had riding experience just never owned a horse start out with a pony approx: 14hh to 14.2 hh.

You should normally start out with a horse because they are WAY calmer than ponies are and children grow but normally don't grow out of them, also horses are usually more tolerant with beginners than a pony would be. ------
Pony for a small child. A stubborn pony can teach a kid a lot. And they have less far to fall if they do. I started out on a somewhat stubborn Shetland, not mean, just stubborn and now I train my own horses and give tips to other people how to handle theirs.
