Best Answer

No. Room, Board, and any personal expenses are not tax deductible on a tax return. The only expenses that are generally deductible are those involved directly with a business in the production of taxable income.

Does a daughter who is in college and had no income this year does need to file?

If your daughter really, really had no income, there is no need to file. Remember that income does not just include wages from a job. It includes interest on a bank account, a scholarship that pays for room and board, withdrawals from an IRA, money for doing odd jobs during the summer, etc.

Can you claim a roomate as a dependent?

You can only claim a roommate as a dependant if the roommate really is financially dependant on you. That would mean that you are providing more than half the room mate's financial support and no one else is claiming the room mate as a dependant.

Do foreigners pay taxes?

Foreigners pay taxes in their own countries, and if/when they visit another country, they pay taxes in the form of sales tax (and excise tax that is built in to certain goods like gas). Yes foreigners pay tax. Example: a US citizen pays income tax on income made in another country, to that country. As does a foreigner here...who makes money here. (A German working for say BMW and in the US, pays US tax). Generally local/sales types of tax are paid also, like anyone else. However, the VAT tax, like a sales tax), is able to be refunded to foreigners who pay it for most places and things in Europe. (A US visiting there and paying it on say a hotel room may have it refunded).

Does preachers file income tax?

Yes, if they receive anything of value (goods or services, stipends, donations, gifts, love offerings, car usage, per diam, room and board, clothing allowance, haircuts, shoe shines, etc.) preachers must file income tax. A preacher receiving a salary from a church would pay as such, any other preacher would pay as an independent contractor, but either way they must render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's unless they want to experience prison ministry from the other side.

Student Tip: Understand Tuition Expenses?

Understanding one's tuition expenses and the source that pays them is essential for filing taxes. If you are using a grant to pay for your room and board in college, then this income may be considered taxable income. This is usually quite a surprise for students in college or grad school. A lot of students are under the impression that a grant is completely non-taxable income. The truth is that a grant is a form of income that may be taxed if it is not used for tuition or book expenses. If you have questions about your grant, then you should contact a tax professional.

If someone pays rent to you, it counts as income. You can, however, fill out the areas on the tax forms where you can depreciate the value of the room (the value is determined based on IRS rules) for the period that you rented it out.
