Experts say to never clean a coin due to the fear of causing damage to the coins surface. However, if the coin is well worn I fail to see how you can cause very much more damage to it if you dip in a cleaner such as Tarnex. It will not remove dirt and crud very well but it does remove tarnish (which is just light corrosion) and even heavier corrosion. Of course a heavily corroded coin has very little value in most cases. A mild soap and a soft cloth may be helpful in cleaning dirt, oils and other crud from the coins surface. Be aware though, if you use a dip such as Tarnex the coin will again begin to tarnish at once and a well worn coin will assume an artificial appearance so you may want to consider leaving it a brown color to begin with.

To clean pennies using vinegar, create a mixture of vinegar and salt. Soak the pennies in the mixture for a few minutes, then scrub them gently with a soft brush or cloth. Rinse the pennies with water and dry them thoroughly. The vinegar helps to dissolve the tarnish on the pennies, making them shiny again.
