The regular maintenance of a starter is what is referred to cleaning the starter. When cleaning a motor it should be disassembled and cleaned using oil.
Check your cables for corrosion; if there is any, clean them or replace them. Clean the connections at the starter and clean all grounding wires; test the starter regardless if you think it is good. Clean the battery terminals.

yes Gasoline is not a safe cleaner.
This usually means a sticking solenoid that keeps the starter engaged after activation. The fix is to remove the starter and clean but my s-10 starter is a closed unit so you will have to replace the complete starter and solenoid unit.
Clicking can mean a loose connection between battery and starter. Follow wire to starter and clean/tighten connector at starter.
Double check the battery cables at the battery and at the engine, be sure they are clean and tight.
check the wiring change the starter relay and clean ignition switch with electicial cleaner.
either clean and tighten cable connections or get battery tested. if not the battery, it is the solenoid or the starter If it is clicking and not starting at first, but starts after a few tries, its your starter taking a dump. Replace it.
If the battery tests good and battery cables are clean and tight at both ends and you are jumping the starter solenoid correctly with no results, you probably have a bad starter/solenoid.
Double check the battery connections, be sure they are clean and tight. Be sure the battery is in good condition and fully charged (12.68 V). Be sure the connections at the starter are clean and tight. Be sure the negative battery cable connection at the engine is clean and tight. Be sure the vehicle is in park or neutral. If all this checks out okay, the starter may be at fault.
Yes of course, why not? Just be sure to clean your ears and earrings.
Is this the airplane? Remove one battery post connector. Remove wire connections from starter. Remove mounting bolts. Remove starter. Clean the bolts and starter hole of any dirt or grease. Install new starter with cleaned bolts and reinstall wires and battery connection.
