Sand filters are not cleaned with chemicals . they are back washed when required. every four or five years it pays to replace the sand in a sand filter to maintain its efficiency.

Nothing if its a sand filter However if sand is coming into the pool from the filter then you may have to replace one ore more laterals in the sand filter as they have worn and are letting sand through to the pool,
If you are getting sand coming into the pool and have a sand filter you may have to replace worn laterals in the sand filter.

you can clean them with a wire brush or sand blast them but its better to just replace them
The spider gasket in your valve may be deteriorated. Buy a spider gasket and some silicon grease at your pool store. Remove the screws in the multi-port valve and replace the spider gasket after you thorough cover it wth grease. To keep this from happening again, never add chlorine through your skimmer. Always use a floater if you use tablets or install an off-line chlorinator as far away from the filter as possible. Hatawa

The sand has to be scooped out or can be shop wet vaced out. Replace with #20 silica sand only but first add water to the filter tank to about half way and cover the stand pipe in the middle of the filter so the sand will not spill into it. k
If you have a sand filter as your filter you may need to remove some of the sand from time to time, But most will be dunped during backwashing. If you have a cartridge filter you may have to clean it more often. If you use D.E. the sand will be dunped when you backwash,Other then that there is no harm. A: Why would you want to be tracking sand into your clean pool? You are just adding more contaminants. YUK !
Remove the old sand in the filter and replace the broken latterals and add new sand as per mfgr's specs.
