Lightly sand the residue.
Varnishes seep into the wood so you wont take the colour off right away like with painted surfaces. Don't sand it too heavily.
Of course if you wish to sand and buff the entire surface of a poor condition floor then a heavy sanding may be what you want however I am going to assume the residue you speak of is a result of surfacing the floor in the first place.

∙ 14y agoA good alcohol based cleaner will give you the best result. It evaporates quickly and does not cause moisture damage water WILL. Spray the cleaner and use a terry cloth mop to wipe up after. A lot of cleaners have kits with all the tools you need. Just check to make sure it is not water based. When in doubt, check! Some other tips to keeping your wood looking great. * Use felt pads under all furniture especially chairs. Check them regularly and replace as needed. * Never steam clean your floors. There are a lot of products that claim to be safe on wood. The manufactures state otherwise. They hold your warranty and experience says it is a bad idea. * Sweep regularly. Most scratches occur from dirt sitting on the floor and being moved around on your shoes. * Turn the beater bar off on your vacuum. Most will have a setting for hard surface. There is no need for it on wood. It will only leave marks on the floor. * Keep pet nails trimmed.
