I received this from mail.com when I tried to close my account. It appears you can't, but have to let it sit idle for a year.

login to your account for 120 days it will automatically be terminated. This
means that any e-mail sent to your account will be returned to sender. If you
wish to re-activate your account you may do so within the first 365 days by
logging in through www.mail.com. You will not have access to any old e-mail
or addresses but your account status will be re-instated.
We value your membership and would like to continue to provide you with e-
mail services. Please feel free to provide us with feedback as to why you
