Place the mouse pointer over the [x] sign in the tab and click. Or
if you are in the tab you want to close, press Ctrl+W Or

Clicking a tab does not close it anyway. It can be closed by clicking on thee right of the tab on the cross sign.
You can right click a tab and select Close other tabs; that leaves just one tab open. However, the quickest way is to press Ctrl+W - that will close the current tab - repeatedly until only one is left open.
Log out and then close the tab. If you'd rather stay logged in simply close the tab!
