The Oedometer test takes 5days to complete. A sample is placed in the Oedometer and loads are applied to the sample. The settlement is then recorded over a period of time. Since no lateral deformation takes place only one dimension is obtained.

On the first day the Oedometer was set up and our sample was placed in the oedometer cell after the size and moisture content (%) was determined. Weights were placed on the arm and the settlement was recorded after an hour. On the second day, after 24hour, the settlement is recorded again and more weight is placed onto the lever arm. This is repeated two more times on 48 and 72hours. On the last day we recorded the rebound and measured the diameter and the final moisture content of our sample.

How nitrogen in soil is detected?

All soil contains nitrogen - it is a matter of how much. The relative amount of nitrogen in soil can be determined with as small soil sample and a reagent for nitrogen from a soil test kit (simple soil test kits are sold in every garden center). The results do not tell you the "amount" of nitrogen in the soil, only if there is enough for healthy plant growth, or if the amount of nitrogen is too poor for healthy plant growth
