If you are using a wired controller you just plug it in.
If you are using a wireless you turn on the controller then click the little button on the very top above the battery pack and the click the little button on the console beside the power button. It should pause the game and make all the circles go around the menu button. This is if your connecting a controller that's never been connected to that console.
If the controller has been connected to that console before just hold the center button on the controller. In some games you will have to be in the menu's in order to connect extra controllers.
