The Previous answer was incorrect. The GameStop ps3 controller should have come with a usb reciever for the wireless controller to connect to our ps3. When you plug it in it will start flashing a red light. just hit the "HOME" button on your controller and it will connect to the PS3 via that wireless usb connector.

Above answer is partly wrong, OK, the ps3 controller is always connected to playstation when you play. It uses normally bluetooth connection. If you "connect" ps3 controller to ps3 with mini usb caple it still uses bluetooth connection when you use it but now its also charging its battery. So the first answer is partly right
You must use the USB cable to connect the PS3 controller. After that it is connected unless it loses the connection and you again need to use the USB mini cable or charging cable. When you buy a new controller if you do not have a charging cable you will not be able to connect it to the PS3 until you get a cable and Plug it into the Controller and PS3 and press the Playstation emblem
idk im having the same problem it wont connect the lights just keep flashin n its got this little usb thingy that connects to the ps3 n i cant get it to work its makin me very mad i just wanna throw it outta the window
I have no problem with my controller because I purchase the Sony PlayStation Dual Shock controller and the only thing I use Gamestop for is information. I buy new Video Games cheaper than they sell used ones for. PS3 does use Bluetooth and when you plug the Sony PS3 provided controller cable into the PS3 USB port and into the controller it quickly connects and shows the controller number instead of flashing lights.
you have too plug in your usb charger to your sytem and plug your controller into tha and it should read it.

Even if the battery is low connecting the USB controller cable should allow the controller to connect when you press the PS3 emblem on the controller. Without another controller you can not tell if the PS3 or controller is the problem and does not work

I think that there's a cable that you can connect the PS3 controller when I first got mine I used it to charge the remote that might work
