If it's a Sony controller simply use the usb cable to plug one end to the ps3 and the other to the controller and unplug it. done. If it's an aftermarket controller simply plug it into the usb.
If you're talking about hooking it back up to a specific ps3, then just plug in the usb charger that should come with the ps3. Hope this helps!

If your ps3 controller isn't working wirelessly, then you may have to reregister it. To do this, you have to plug it into the ps3 with the special cord. If it still doesn't work, even if it is left plugged in, then you may have something wrong with your controller and you may have to purchase a new controller. You should also check the charge on the PS3 wireless controller. if you unplug a PS3 that battery is not charged it will not work. When you turn off the PS3 if you have not set the PS3 to also turn off the controller automatically in controller setting the controller will remain on and the battery will drain. The PS3 does not charge controllers when it is off.
The PS3 Slim comes with everything a regular PS3 comes with. This includes the new slim version of the consile, the power adapter, the audio cord (yellow/white/red cord), and wireless Sixaxis 3 controller. Memory is already integrated in the system, so there's no need for a memory or SD card. Any other accessories would have to be purchased, such as a controller charger, Blu-ray remote, extra controllers, etc.
No even the PS3 can not change like the PS4 with new features that allows it to charge the controller while the console is turned off
I've seen new ones by Sony as low as $33 and seen used ones asking the same. Some brands of PS3 controllers are not made by Sony and start out cheaper. Walmart.com has wired PS3 controllers starting at 20$ and wireless under 30$, but there Sony Dual shock is $45. On Ebay the prices start at $1 and go up for controllers with high shipping and off brands. I saw a Sony for $15 incl S/H

you cant ----------------- this answer is wrong, since you can connect a ps2 controller to a ps3 by using a usb adapter, which are usually around $5-$15. Wireless ps2 controllers usually work best, because they take less space.
You plug the controller directly into the PlayStation with a USB cable and hold the PS button until it connects.
