In most parts of CA, you must go to court to contest a parking ticket, and you will have to convince the judge that the ticket should not have been given to you.
In some cities (Lafayette in Contra Costa County; Bellflower, Maywood, and Los Angeles in LA County; Santa Paula in Ventura County), you can contest a parking ticket online. Click the "Self Help and Legal Research" related link below and scroll down to the appropriate county and city for links to their online ticket contest sites.
You can also check with the city police department or the clerk of court for your county to see if they have recently implemented an online ticket contest procedure. Contact information for courts by county is at the "California Courts Guide - Courts by County" related link; select your county in the box in the upper left of the page. For police departments by county and city, use the "California Public Records" related link; select your county in the box in the upper left, then use the alphabetical list at the top of the page to find your city.
You can contest a parking ticket by going to civil court on the date that it is due and the date written on the ticket. You can explain your reasons for contesting it to the judge and they will make a decision on the spot.
