well, say you are taking 12 hours. You have two 3 hour courses, one 2 hour course, and a 4 hour course.

so you have

Well, at most institutions, the grading scale is as follows:

A=4.0

B=3.0

C=2.0

D=1.0

F=0

Then you multiply

2 x 1 = 2

3 x 2 = 6

3 x 3 = 9

4 x 4 = 16

You then take the total of the sum of the objects of the rightmost column, which in this

case, is 33, and you divide that number (33) by the total amount of hours you are taking (which would be 12 in the example), and your grade is 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

That's the reverse of what you were asking, i believe, but this message will give you some extra insight on the 4.0 scale.
