The plurals of most nouns are made by adding an 's'. e.g. apple/apples. And there are special cases and rules that come with different word endings, e.g. lady/ladies, potato/potatoes.

However, some singular nouns have irregular plurals . Because they are irregular, there is no rule for converting such nouns into their respective plural forms:

Some examples of nouns with irregular plurals:

  • goose/geese
  • sheep/sheep
  • man/men
  • mouse/mice
  • person/people
  • cactus/cacti

Often you add an s eg house becomes houses. goat = goats.

Some words are unusual because their plural is rather different.

So mouse becomes mice, die becomes dice, medium becomes media.

Add "s" or "es" to the end.

Examples: (singular -> plural)

  • Apple -> apples.
  • Menu -> Menus
  • Frog -> frogs.
  • Box -> boxes.
  • Tomato -> tomatoes.

There are also many irregular nouns which have special plural forms, or where the plural noun is the same as the singular.

Examples: (singular -> plural)

  • Mouse -> mice.
  • Medium -> media.
  • Deer -> deer.
  • Species -> species.

A regular plural is a noun that has a plural ending in -s or -es. To make the plural singular, remove the ending -s or -es:

  • birds to bird
  • churches to church
  • goats to goat
  • lunches to lunch
  • glasses to glass

There are too many forms of irregular plural to have a simple answer. A knowledge of irregular plurals or a dictionary are often the only simple way to change an irregular plural to its singular form or to know which plural is irregular or regular. Some examples are:

  • heroes to hero
  • tomatoes to tomato
  • photos to photo
  • tattoos to tattoo
  • babies to baby
  • ladies to lady
  • boys to boy
  • days to day
  • calves to calf
  • knives to knife
  • wives to wife
  • men to man
  • feet to foot
  • mice to mouse
  • children to child
  • bases to basis
  • crises to crisis
  • diagnoses to diagnosis
  • media to medium
  • data to datum
  • formulae to formula
  • axes to axis
  • indeces to index
  • stimuli to stimulus
