How they cope at seashore depends on what is going on at the time. If a hurricane is coming then a person will cope by boarding up their windows and taking shelter.

Having the belief in god helps peopl ecope with suffering because it makes someone feel as if they are lost without a family member they have somewhere to go to for example prayer and a church where they can talk to god and having that existance makes them feel less alone and more able to cope.
Psychotherapy is important in helping to cope with guilt, low self-esteem, and inadequate behavioral patterns once the neurochemistry is stabilized and more normal levels of neurotransmitters are at work.

As long as one's devotion is done on his/her own body, it is a deadly sad way to cope with inner suffering. Much better it would be to seek for psychological help, but it's a free will question there. Obviously, if the devotion is to someone else's amputation...it's a crime and therefore the culprit is a mentally unstable person.
