The song has to be ripped to your computer before you can import it into Windows Movie Maker. In other words, it has to be a file on your system (and not on the CD itself).

Your Windows Media Player has a feature for ripping audio from a CD.

Once you have the audio on your computer, make sure it is one of the following formats:

.aif, .aifc, .aiff .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma

Note: To find the format (file name extension) right-click the file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu.

If the audio is in the correct format for Windows Movie Maker, click the Import Media button in the program, locate the audio and click Import. It will appear in the Imported Media pane. Drag and drop the Music/Audio track (Time-line view). Click Play in the Preview pane to hear results.

Make sure Windows Movie Maker is open in the Time-line view. Then locate the audio file you want to use. Copy it. Right-click on the Music/Audio track and paste.

Note: It is just as easy (and more reliable) to import media into Windows Movie Maker rather than the copy and paste method. The reason I say this is because sometimes the program pastes the song into the Music/Audio track, while at other times pastes it into Imported Media Collection pane. And, every now and then, the copy/paste method may cause Windows Movie Maker to freeze up or stop responding. So, it is best to use the Import Media feature whenever possible.
