A Japanese Maple should only be pruned if absolutely neccessary. Any dead wood should be cut away or any branches that spoil the shape. Otherwise leave it alone.
The correct binomial scientific name for red maple is Acer rubrum.

Maple decks are HORRIBLE. don't even contemplate getting a maple, I mean if you're getting it for a starter who weighs less than 80 pounds then it may be decent, otherwise no. Definitely not.
You should always get a hard maple bat. If you are getting a maple bat then you want something hard that is why maple is so popular because of the density and strength of the wood. If someone is trying to sell you soft maple it is because it is being made out of their bad billets.

Maple Edit: Maple is incorrect. I believe the correct answer is Hickory. On the Janka hardness scale, Hickory is 1820 while Maple is only 1450. (For perspective, red oak is 1290).

It may be correct or incorrect. It depends where you live.
You should actually look at it's leaf and find out whether or not the genes match the correct verozirizing moisture. There is lots of hyporozolic acids in maple tree but most do not harm so the only real way to figure if you have a real maple is by breaking down the substances into spetular part and seeing if the micrograms match the correct sploserer genes. By having a microscope with either 200/10 micro lens or by getting a decomposter and completing all its nutrients into the corrosive velpter (decomposer). Im sorry if this is very difficult but I was taught by doing sub-natural lettering.
