To write fanfiction, you must first know the original work. Read all the books in the series, or watch all the movies or TV shows, or read all the comics. Learn all about the original work until you know the personalities of all the characters, how the world works in the original fiction, and what logically might happen.
You will need to be able to write in the style of the original work, so that your version seems to be another "chapter" in the original!
Once you know the "canon," you can write whatever story you want. Remember that you cannot sell fanfiction because it is derivative - the copyright belongs to the original author. You can post your stories online or pass them around between friends, however.
If you are interested in Real Person Fanfiction - which is fiction written about actual actors or celebrities, you must be super careful! You could easily be sued if something you wrote was seen by the person you wrote about, and if they thought it was insulting.

The dictionary classifies fan fiction (otherwise known as fan fics) as: "a fictional account written by a fan of a show, movie, book, or video game to explore themes and ideas that will not or cannot be explored via the originating medium".
So quite basically, to make a fan fiction, you need to figure out what interests you. Whether it's a specific television show, movie, book, ect (as listed above) if there's a certain character(s) that you love, try and start there!
From that point, you can brainstorm to create an interesting plot or storyline for your fan fiction. Some people like to write their ideas down on paper or create webs, while others can just dive right in. It's different for everyone, but don't be afraid of trial and error. You may like one storyline at first, only to change your mind several times before your idea is complete. But don't give up, keep trying.
Remember that when creating a fan fiction, keeping your characters in character is key. What does this mean? Say for example you're writing about the most evil villain of your favorite book series -- you want the main focus to be on his darkness and cruel nature. You would not, however, write about him playing gently with a fluffy kitten. See what I mean? That's a fairly extreme scenario to use, but it should help to get the point across. If you don't keep your characters in their right stance, your audience may find your story unappealing or stop reading it all together.
Fan fiction may seem like a very complex thing at first glance, but it's sure to become easier once you're more familiar with it. Just remember to write what's interesting and pleasing to you. Others may criticize your work at first, but stay strong. Let your creativity flourish and you'll find it's all worth it in the end.
